This is a two-year certificate based on the final two years of secondary education.
VCE students will complete up to 22 units over two years. At STHS, most students will select 12 units in their first year and 10 units in their second year.
Students must complete a minimum of 16 units including:
Normally all learning outcomes must be completed by the deadlines set by class teachers. Under some circumstances, students may apply for extension of time to demonstrate learning outcomes. Level coordinators will provide details of this process.
Students will be assessed as “S” (Satisfactory completion) or “N” (Unit not completed) at the end of each VCE unit. Assessment tasks will be scored or graded from A+ to E and will have a description related to each grade. Work submitted which does not satisfy the minimum requirements will be ungraded (UG). When work is not submitted for assessment, the symbol NA (Not Assessed) will be used. Internal examinations will be held at the end of each semester for Units 1 & 2 (Year 11 level units). Unit 3 & 4 (Year 12 level units) coursework assessments are passed to the Victorian Curriculum & Assessment Authority.
The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning is be offered at Seymour Technical High School each year at both the Foundation and Intermediate levels. The VCAL is an accredited senior secondary qualification undertaken in Years 11 &12, which is based on applied learning principles. It involves “hands on” courses that aim to develop skills to prepare students for employment, further education and training. There are no entry requirements and the course is pitched at Year 11 & 12 students who want practical experience and “employability” skills. The VCAL is an alternative to the VCE, which focuses more on higher education pathways.
Studies involve literacy and numeracy, industry specific skills (through VET courses), work related skills (involving work placements) and personal development skills aimed at building work and life skills. The VCAL gives a student practical “work related” experience and a qualification recognized by TAFE Institutes and employers. It extends your pathways into work, apprenticeships, traineeships or further education including VET courses.
